Saint Ephraim The Syrian And High Bloodpressure

What type of medical treatment was available in Saint Ephraim the Syrian’s day and age?  Unfortunately not a lot is known as the advancement of medical technology was just getting started around 400 BC-1 BC. This is when the framework was laid for traditional Chinese medicine.  Many can speculate that they did not understand the workings of high bloodpressure.Another idea of what was known about medical advancements is that in 400 BC the Sushruta Samhita was published. This helped to lay the inner workings for the Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurvedic medicine was the series of traditional medicine, which is from India.  In order for them to diagnosis you they will examine you first. From the examination features they did not understand exactly what high bloodpressure was? Some of the features to their exam were:

  • Abnormality
  • Essence
  • Stability
  • Body measurements
  • Diet suitability
  • Psychic Strength
  • Physical fitness
  • Age
  • Digestive capacity
  • Constitution

They usually look at other aspects to diagnosis a patient those were

  • Where the disease began
  • Symptoms
  • Typical symptoms of the disease
  • Pathological process
  • Effect of procedures

During Ephraim’s time the medical knowledge was minimal. They had little knowledge about what is going on. They didn’t understand what high bloodpressure is and how it worked. They usually diagnosed high bloodpressure as another medical issue. Ephraim’s time might not have been the best in the medical age but it was a great time for him with his sermons, poems and hymns. Many of his poems and hymns are still around and used today in the church. Many people worship and understand how important Ephraim’s writings were to their Christianity.  Ephraim was very blessed by god and even with all his talents he was very humble. He died on January 28, 373 after a brief illness.
